The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
In order to gain the bigger picture, David continued today’s verse with: “Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveal knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world” (Ps. 19:2-4).
Image a phenomenal painter from, let’s say, the sixteenth century. The local museum has the privilege of hosting all his artwork for the next twelve months. In order to celebrate his life and skill, the museum has put out hundreds of breathtaking replicas in every street throughout the town, each having an arrow directing the visitors to the museum. While he’s been dead for over four centuries, his paintings still declare and testify of his amazing skill.
However, even though seeing the replicas throughout the town each day, some are vehemently denying the painter’s existence. Others even go so far as to claim that billion and billions of years ago there was a great “big bang,” and, throughout the centuries, the whole art collection slowly developed into breathtaking paintings. It’s no wonder David wrote: “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Ps. 14:1).
Creation continuously testifies of its Creator and His glory. Each day it “pours out speech.” There are no audible words but definite visuals. That’s why Paul wrote: “For his [God’s] invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse” (Rom. 1:20). Just like all the replicas gave clear evidence of the painter, even so creation gives definite evidence of God. Only a fool would deny His existence.
When we consider “the heavens” and “the sky above,” we see something of God’s greatness. The immeasurable universe testifies of God as follows: “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable” (Ps. 145:3). His greatness and glory are past finding out!
