My times are in your hand.
One of my favorite lines from In Christ Alone is: “No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the power of Christ in me. From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny.” Today’s verse declares His absolute control over every time in your life.
When Solomon wrote his famous passage, he used the same Hebrew word: “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace” (Eccl. 3:1-8). Jesus holds all these times in His hand.
What if the opposite was true? What if all these events were beyond His sovereign control? He would then be dependent on our times. While we may not understand this mind-blowing reality, we must never deny it in order to make it fit our intellect.
David had many adversaries who plotted to take his life. His only comfort and hope was that his times were in God’s control. While his enemies wanted to kill him, he knew that the hour of his death wasn’t up to them. They were not in charge. Jesus was and is!
