He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe though him
John’s mandate was to be a witness—“to bear witness about the light.” While His mission was in one sense unique, being the designated forerunner of the Messiah, those who have received God’s light—believers in Jesus—have the same mandate.
John’s witness was through His words and life. Jesus said of him: “You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth . . . He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light” (John 5:33-35). Not only did John proclaim God’s truth, his life was also “a burning and shining lamp.” With our lives we either diminish or adorn the reality of God’s truth. John lived out his mission.
The only goal of his witness was “that all might believe through him.” Paul described that as follows: “Through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations” (Rom. 1:5). Our sole goal is to testify of Jesus in order that people will believe in Him, receiving His light and life in their darkness and spiritual deadness.
