I don’t know about you, but I sometimes struggle with seeing how far I fall short of God’s word and will. While Paul is many (many!) classes ahead of me (I feel that I am sometimes still in kindergarten, learning the ABC about God’s love), he did write something similar: “For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate” (Rom. 7:15).
In such a struggle, I was reminded of what John wrote: “Whoever has the Son has life” (1 John 5:12). The Father gave His Son to us. When I was still “dead in the trespasses and sins,” justly deserving His wrath (Eph. 2:1-3), He graciously gave His Son to me. If He did so when I was spiritually dead, how much more does He have that same desire and intent while I’m His struggling child!
When we have the Son, we have everything He is and everything He has accomplished and promised to do. Having Him is having eternal life because He rose from the dead and lives eternally. Having Him is all we need!
